Plot
Butch lesbian Jamie Klein (Michelle Ehlen) is down on her luck. Unemployed and single, even her roommate’s cat is winning more acting roles than she is. In a desperate attempt to change her fortunes, Jamie decides to stop ‘going femme’ for auditions, and as a result finds herself cast as a man. In a reversal of Dustin Hoffman’s 1982 flick Tootsie, plenty of white lies, misunderstandings and gender-bending comedy ensue.
Verdict
With its cross-dressing, thigh-slapping humour, the release of the super-silly Butch Jamie coincides nicely with the end of Panto season. Fake moustaches and de-gaying sessions will always raise a smile, but gay audiences may be less impressed by the stereotypical queer-flick components. Lesbian-acoustica plot-aids and displaced directorial monologues are unnecessary, and about as subtle as a come-on from Grace Jones. Butch Jamie’s saving grace however, is that unlike many a budget lesbian flick it refuses to take itself too seriously. There’s something charming about the gentle humour on display, and despite the macho cover, at heart it’s a sweet homespun tale about the importance of honesty.
